The Friday night at the most precious monument of Toru?'s New Town, St. Jacob's Church, will be filled with the music of Polish composers, performed by soloists of the Toru? Symphony Orchestra, who have been playing together in the same line-up for 13 years as the String Quartet of the Orchestra. The ensemble's concert programmes are typically based on the works of world chamber music and Polish contemporary music; this time we will hear them perform the string quartets of Stanis?aw Moniuszko and Karol Szymanowski, preceded by a chamber piece “Kuyavian-Pomeranian Imaginations” (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Imaginacje) by a Toru? composer, Magdalena Cynk.
The String Quartet in D minor by Stanis?aw Moniuszko, written in 1839, was dedicated to the person responsible for discovering Fryderyk Chopin's talent: the Warsaw composer Józef Elsner. Moniuszko's early composition, stylistically under the influence of the Viennese masters, is characterised by beautiful, romantic melody, simplicity and lyrical quality.
The String Quartet No. 1 in C major, op. 37 was composed in a difficult period for Szymanowski in 1917, when the artist, as a result of political turmoil, was forced to leave his home in Tymoszówka. A work of sophisticated sound, considered by critics to be the first prominent string quartet in the Polish music literature, combined all the best qualities of the composer's music. Interestingly, in 1922 String Quartet No. 1 received the first prize (amounting to 500,000 Polish markas!) at a chamber music composition contest, announced by the Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Education of the time.
"Kuyavian-Pomeranian Imaginations" is a 1997 miniature of mosaic and motoric character, containing episodes varying in terms of motion types. It presents visions, notions, fantasies and images inspired by our region.
